Vitamin D for Immune Booster

Vitamin D was long known for its role in keeping the bones strong and healthy, but we now know that it also plays a critical role in keeping your immune system running smoothly.

Our skin synthesizes vitamin D when it hits the sun, and you do not need a long exposure to receive the benefit. This is why I highly recommend that you take a 10-15 min walk after lunch (but protect your face with sunscreen please).

Unfortunately, excessive use of sunscreen and spending more time indoor during the winter make many people susceptible to vitamin D deficiency this time of the year. This is why it is more important to make sure that you are consuming enough food that is rich in vitamin D. Below is the list of Vitamin D rich food:

Mushrooms (eat a wide variety if you can)

Seafood (cod liver oil in particular)

Egg yolk (egg white contains none)

Beef liver

How does liver and onion with a lot of mushrooms sound?

Overdose

If you are going to use supplements to increase your vitamin D intake, please make sure to test your serum vitamin D level periodically. Its overdose can lead to calcification of soft tissues, polyuria (large amount of urine), kidney failure, and kidney stone.  It is super hard to overdose Vitamin D through food or sun exposure, so try not to rely on supplements!
